Licence Categories for Bus or Truck Drivers
(including graduation eligibility criteria)
 

LIGHT RIGID		A Light Rigid vehicle is any bus or truck greater than 4.5 tonnes GVM but equal to or less than 8 tonnes GVM, or seating more than 12 adults (including the driver). To be eligible to apply for a Light Rigid licence, the applicant must have held a car driver licence for at least 12 months.
MEDIUM RIGID		A Medium Rigid vehicle is any 2-axle bus or truck greater than 8 tonnes GVM. To be eligible to apply for a Medium Rigid licence, the applicant must have held a car driver licence for at least 12 months.
HEAVY RIGID		A Heavy Rigid vehicle is any bus or truck with 3 or more axles greater than 8 tonnes GVM. To be eligible to apply for a Heavy Rigid licence, the applicant must have held a car driver licence for at least 24 months.
HEAVY COMBINATION		A Heavy Combination vehicle is a prime mover with a single semi-trailer exceeding 9 tonne, or a rigid vehicle plus trailer greater than 9 tonnes GVM. To be eligible to apply for a Heavy Combination licence, the applicant must have held a car driver licence for at least 24 months, including an MR or HR licence for at least 12 months.
MULTI COMBINATION		A Multi Combination vehicle is a Heavy Combination vehicle with one or more additional trailers. To be eligible to apply for a Multi Combination licence, the applicant must have held a HR, HC or combination of a HR & HC licence for at least 12 months plus completion of a VicRoads approved course.
